Lobban and Evans join English trios in semis
The fourth day of play in Nottingham saw the semi-finalists decided with Scotland’s Greg Lobban and Wales’ Tesni Evans joining English trios in the men’s and women’s last fours.
The women’s semis will be contested by the top four seeds. Four-time champion and top seed Laura Massaro battled through a tough encounter with local favourite Millie Tomlinson to set up a repeat of last year’s semi against defending champion Evans, who also came from a game down as she beat Julianne Courtice.
Second seed Alison Waters is also still on for a fifth title after winning three close games against Fiona Moverley, and she’ll face Emily Whitlock, the birthday girl who came from a game down to beat surprise package Kace Bartley.
Men’s top seed James Willstrop was again in great form as he saw off Nathan Lake in half an hour, although the lefthander threatened to extend the match with a strong challenge at the end of the third.
Willstrop will face Lobban, who came through in three close tough games over Richie Fallows to become the first player to represent Scotland in the semis since 2004 champion John White in 2007.
Second seed Daryl Selby survived a second successive marathon five setter, coming from two-one down to deny Chris Simpson in 98 minutes, setting up a semi-final against Adrian Waller, who produced the day’s only seeding upset as he beat Tom Richards in four games.
